our history

Evolving to meet our community’s needs.

NewStory Center’s journey began in 1979 with a simple yet powerful mission: to provide a safe haven for women escaping domestic violence. Back then, we were known as the Rutland County Battered Women’s Shelter. Our first home was in the old jail on Center Street—a stark but symbolic reminder of the confinement survivors often face.

Determined to create a more welcoming space, we moved to a house with room for 24 beds, soon known as HerStory House. For many in Rutland County, that name still carries deep meaning, a place where healing and hope took root. By 1981, we became the Rutland County Women’s Network & Shelter, expanding our services to meet the growing needs of the community.

In 2017, we embraced a new name—NewStory Center—to reflect our evolving understanding of domestic and sexual violence and our commitment to serve all survivors, regardless of gender or age. Today, our vision is clear: to create a Rutland County where violence is not tolerated, and every survivor has the support to write a new chapter of safety and empowerment.
